Windsurfing on the Thames

I thought it might be fun to windsurf in central london on the Thames! Go under Towerbridge and so forth.

Is it legal? Well, find out below:

I wasn't sure if windsurfing in central london is actually allowed but couldn't find any information on the web. So, I then tried a host of very friendly windsurfing clubs and eventually got to the right person to ask.

Essentially it is the Harbour Master Upper of the Port of London Authority that has the information. What I found is that windsurfing on the thames in central london is not allowed :-(

I did think as much, but one can always try. I did find out though that apparently they used to have some windsurfing races on the river thames a while ago, though got no specific information. Anyone out there ever done it?

This restriction on windsurfing is applicable from the Teddington Lock on to the Thames Estuary. I'm not sure what the situation is above the Teddington Lock and apparently you'll want to get in touch with the environment agency as they have jusridiction over that section of the Thames.

Anyway, hope it helps some other misguided individual to find information on windsurfing on the thames in central london.

thx, max

Why not?

Did they give a reason as to why it is not allowed? Is it on safety grounds?

Yeah safety given that it's

Yeah safety given that it's a very busy river.

However! Talking to some friends they reckoned that they've definitly seen sail boats - the small ones - sailing happily along the thames.

So I'm wondering now if I've just been fobbed off by the harbour master and there is nothing to stop you using the thames.

It is probably one of those

It is probably one of those things where by there is a rule against it, but if you actually do it, noone will stop you!
