The China Factor

It has been reported today that China is the worlds leading producer of carbon dioxide, passing the levels of the USA. China is building two new power stations a week and most of these are coal burning. Many people in the West are probably thinking "what is the point in us reducing carbon?".

Well, it might well be true that the human race will not reduce its overall carbon emissions if China and Indian continue to increase their contribution. But is that a reason not to act?

China and India are both developing countries. We in the West are already developed. We enjoy a prosperous life style and immense opportunity. Our countries have spent hundreds of years developing advanced, modern economies and in the process have done our fair share of polluting (and still do). The whole in the ozone layer over New Zealand, Australia and Antarctica was caused by developed countries emitting ozone depleting chemicals into the atmosphere. Rampant consumption by developed countries has lead to an ever expanding need to supply our demand of goods and services, leading to more and more of the worlds resources being used and the level of carbon emissions that is causing global warming panic.

Are we really in a position to tell China and India to halt their increases in carbon emissions? We already enjoy the enormous benefits of living in a developed nation. Are we really going to sit here and tell Chinese and Indian citizens that they can not enjoy the same lifestyle as us?

The only solution is for the developed countries to take the lead in protecting the environment. We have the money and know how to develop technology that will lead to an environmentally friendly economy. An economy that is low in carbon, uses the worlds finite resources efficiently and creates less pollution is in our grasp. We just need the will power to make it happen.

China and Indian are hardly going to say no to uses any eco friendly technology. They do not want to destroy the world. They just want a chance to develop.

Great article on China and

Great article on China and Global Warming!

I think everybody should spend a couple of minutes reading this article on Chinese pollution and then not spend another minute talking about it.

Briefly:
Developed countries love nothing more than to place other countries as the scape goat. There is hardly any discussion about the environment without someone mentioning China.

I think most of us like to trick ourselves into thinking that we want to save the environment... but then... blame it on someone else.

Now I have to ask myself if I've just wasted my and your time discussing China, once again, or if it might actually make us stop talking about China and getting on with some real action.
