The No Fish Diet

I gave up eating anything that comes from the sea and oceans sometime ago. Fish and seafood was never my favorite food in the world, but I did enjoy quite a lot of the different types of fish, particular fish caught on the same day. And of course fish/sea food is very very good for you.

I just could not stomach the idea of mankind wiping out the worlds fish stocks and destroying fragile ecosystems. I don't think anyone I that I have spoken to has understood my position. "But you eat steak and chicken and lamb etc. Surely that is just as bad!" was the standard reply. Well, maybe it is just as bad. But the point that got me into this no fish diet was the fact that with fish/sea food, we are taking from a natural ecosystem and dramatically effecting its balance, and in some cases wiping out entire species. Not to mention the number of whales and dolphins that get caught up in fishing nets, and the fact that we are taking their food. Whereas with cows, sheep, chickens and pigs, they are farmed by humans for the purpose of feeding humans. We are not taken them from a natural ecosystem. There numbers are not threatened. I accept that forest land has been cleared to make room for farms and I hate the idea of new forests being cleared. But becoming a vegetarian will not solve that problem because fruit, vegetables and other plant based food have to be farmed as well and is often more land intensive than animal based farms.

So there we have it. I don't eat fish. I don't mind if others do because that is their choice, just as it is my choice not too. And I have finally found someone else who would not think I am a complete lunatic. Here is an interesting article on The Economist website, written by another fish free person (that makes two of us, anyone else?).

There's plenty of farmed

There's plenty of farmed fish, so you need not worry!

I was in a posh restaurant the other day (where a bottle of house red was over £50!) and all their fish was farm reared fish. Seems that other people share your passion for fish but don't want to eat wild animals.

So on that note I invite you to tuck back in to lovely fish!
