The London Cycle Network

I was thinking about this the other day whilst cycling in London. It would be fairly easy to create a network through London for cyclists and only cyclists. All we would need to do is put a side certain streets as cycle ways where cars were not allowed to travel down. All of these streets could decend onto central london, with orbital streets connecting them all up. So it would become like a spider web. Of course, we would not have to use busy roads. With some decent planning, I'm sure a good network could be built using side roads. Of course, people living on those roads will want car access, so perhaps an exception can be made for them.

And it will be good for the car drivers! It should encourage more people to cycle, so there will be less cars on the main roads and therefore less congestion.

What do you all think?

i wouldn't complain at all

i wouldn't complain at all about that.
you could also build tunnels that can catch and direct wind. One tunnel to go one way and another bicycle tunnel to go the other way. That way you would always have a tail wind and that would make it fast and very easy to travel. I suspect you'd have to make them pretty big as they could be very popular. I know this one has been proposed many times before. Not sure why not a single one is in existance?

Too expensive?

I'm assuming a bicycle tunnel would be very expensive to build and public money is probably better spent on other areas. Although if it did see a massive uplift in the number of people who cycle, then maybe it is worth it. But I reckon you would need a lot of them to make any difference. And that would obviously be very very expensive.
